Earthquakes in the last 24 hours

There was a sharp 4.5 quake at 3.20 am centred 35 km SW of Wellington, 17 km deep. I managed to sleep through it in our wooden bungalow.

I wonder if this is why there were so many people leaving the capital  last night?

PS. It was reported in earlier reports on Radio NZ but no mention of it since.

Central New Zealand shaken awake by magnitude 4.6 Cook Strait earthquake

26 November, 2016

A magnitude 4.6 aftershock that woke much of Wellington on Saturday morning was closer to the capital than most - but within probability modelling, GeoNet says.

The magnitude 4.6 earthquake centred 30km south-west of the capital Wellington - in Cook Strait - struck at 3.22am at a depth of 17m.

7 am update: 116 eq in last 12 hour, 249 eq in last 24 hrs (only 3 over M4) and 5710 eq since the M7.8 Kaikoura Earthquake.

It was widely felt in Wellington, Hutt Valley, Porirua, Kapiti Coast, Blenheim, Marlborough Sounds, Nelson and Motueka.

It comes at a nervous time for central New Zealand after a magnitude 7.8 earthquake near Culverden in North Canterbury on November 14 and more than 1000 aftershocks since that closed State Highway 1, left seaside town Kaikoura isolated and caused building damage in Wellington's CBD.

GeoNet seismologist Tony Hurst said the M4.6 was closer to Wellington than previous aftershocks but its magnitude and location within the Cook Strait fault zone was within probability modelling.

The Cook Strait fault zone has many different faults, which do not connect directly with the Wellington-Hutt Valley or Wairarapa fault zones.

"It was similar to what we've had before, it was in the middle of the Cook Strait. It was much closer to Wellington than most of the significant aftershocks, they've been a bit further south.

"Most of them have been down around north Canterbury."

Hurst said many of the aftershocks in the past two weeks were centred around Cape Campbell, which lies near the Seddon and Needles faults. The Cook Strait faults do not run directly into the Wellington Fault, which extends into Cook Strait from the Hutt Valley.

Hurst said the aftershock generated more than 1500 "felt" reports.

"It's entirely the sort of region that's been shaken up by this big 7.8.

"A Cook Strait epicentre, that's a very typical type of where we've been getting [aftershocks]. There are a lot of faults in the Cook Strait. It"s not at all surprising that has been set off by the effects of this big earthquake."

TheCook Strait region generated large-magnitude quakes in 2013

OK that was definitely significant - a sharp jolt out of nowhere, followed by a stretch of moderate rocking.

A mag 6.5 - quake strikes Tajikistan...The 4th major quake to hit the planet since Monday

25 November, 2016

It’s another big one! A magnitude 6.5 - 49km NE of Karakul, strikes Tajikistan, making it the 4th major quake to hit earth since Monday.
And major quakes were predicted on Monday by The Big Wobble as a major coronal hole turned to face the Earth See here

On Tuesday the stricken nuclear station, Fukushima had it's cooling system shut down, a meteor burned through the sky and a tsunami evacuation warning after a powerful mag 6.9 quake hit Japan. And on Thursday a massive 7.2 earthquake rocked El Salvador as Hurricane Otto made landfall!
The massive coronal hole is now moving away from Earth facing but we are still in the danger zone, see below.

This afternoon's major quake was the 11th of this November and the 123rd of 2016.

The West coast of the US is looking more and more vulnerable as its the only area of the "ring of fire" not to witness a major quake this year and the law of averages would suggest "the big one" has to come sooner or later.

TSUNAMI hits El Salvador and Nicaragua after 3 devastating earthquakes

Authorities in El Salvador have issued a tsunami alert after a 7.0 magnitude earthquake shook the country and neighbouring Nicaragua.

The Pacific Ocean tremor occurred on Thursday around 120km off the coast of El Salvador, at a depth of 33km, according to the US Geological Survey.

Earlier reports had put the quake's magnitute at 7.2.

There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

In El Salvador, the eartquake could be felt in the regions of Chalatenango, San Salvador, Cabanas and San Miguel.

El Salvador sits along the major seismic zone known as the Pacific Ring of Fire, a series of faults marked by 450 active volcanoes over 40,000km.

Over the last two weeks, earthquakes with magnitudes over 7.0 have hit Japan and New Zealand, both of which are also near the Ring of Fire.

Shaking was also felt in the Nicaraguan capital of Managua, and as far as the Costa Rican capital San Jose.

The earthquake struck one hour after a powerful hurricane packing winds of 175 kilometres per hour made landfall on Nicaragua's other coast.

The heavy rains hurricane Otto was offloading were likely to cause dangerous flooding and mud slides, according to the US National Hurricane Center.

Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega declared a state of emergency due to the quake and the storm.
