Sad news from Forest and Bird: the earthquake caused a landslide that has damaged breeding grounds of the critically endangered Hutton Shearwater.
"Our seabird advocate Karen Baird says half of the largest colony has slipped away. Birds will be on eggs at the moment, so it's a devastating loss for a species already considered at risk. However, this is a risk the birds always faced as our Important Bird Areas predicts geological events like this have the potential to wipe out 10-49% of the Hutton's Shearwater colony - depending on timing of breeding."
