6 deg. C measured 440 miles from the North Pole

SHOCKING!
The northernmost permanent weather station in the world, just 440 miles from the North Pole, has warmed to 43°F (6 deg. C) today
This is in the middle of months-long darkness during what is normally the coldest time of the year.

Surface temperatures over a large part of the Arctic Ocean are forecast to be up to 30°C (or 54°F) warmer on February 25, 2018, compared to 1979-2000.

Wow... truly a remarkable event ongoing right now in the . Current temperatures well above previous years in February (>80°N latitude)! Average temperature is the bright blue line ().

Sea ice extent in the Bering Sea (Arctic) continues its decline. "Warm" and strong southerly winds have contributed to this anomalous retreat of ice into the Bering Strait. 2018 is the clear outlier in the satellite era (each thin line = 1979-2017, data)

  1. This is exactly what we would expect to see in a runaway scenario.

    1. Question is of course, why are the airstreams affecting the pole so hot? West Antarctica has been averaging temperatures of 40C or more, above the volcanic rift, than in East Antarctica too. Geothermal heat flux is omitted from all the IPCC calculations too.

  2. There is s report out now that suggests we Will avoid, in all probability, the IPCC worst case scenarios this century. But stories like this offer a chance to reflect on the accuracy of predictive climate models. The interrelationships between climate, oceanic and terrestrial systems is ridiculously complicated with errors amplifying st each round of calculations. Scientists are naturally conservative. From that we can say that we shouldn't be shocked by news like this.
